Drop-In Meal Program Individual Volunteers
If you are looking for a one-time, group opportunity, please click here.
We welcome neighbours, students, program participants, and just about anyone who wants to enrich our local community to volunteer with us here at the Drop-In Meal Program at Church of the Redeemer.
Volunteering in our kitchen is a great way to orient yourself with our program. Our kitchen is run ENTIRELY on invested volunteers. Usually, people that commit to volunteering in the kitchen will commit to one consistent day per week, though other arrangements can be made if necessary.
The volunteer shift in the kitchen is generally 8 or 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, and all volunteers help with set up, food prep, serving meals, and clean up.
Benefits to volunteering in our kitchen:
We ask all volunteers to fill out a volunteer application, have an interview with our Outreach Coordinator, and demonstrate a non-judgemental, welcoming, and positive attitude. Volunteers are automatically put on a probationary period at the beginning of their volunteer position.
To get started, you can find our volunteer application here.
In addition to volunteering in the kitchen, we have some other positions in our program.
Experienced, welcoming volunteers are needed to be present on the floor, greet people, build relationships, and help participants with finding resources as needs arise. Drop-In volunteers are present during open hours, and generally commit to one day per week. Experience working with people in a similar environment is helpful.
Currently, we have two special projects in need of volunteers. They are:
The art studio is held once a week during program, and provides a welcoming place where participants can interact with art and create art in a meaningful, fun way. We believe art can be a restorative path to healing. Volunteers in this program will help with set up and clean up, interact with participants and make art themselves, and help with the organization of the Art Studio and an art show.
A pilot project will be starting this year that engages our community in a different way. We will offer interactive cooking classes, where participants will be in the kitchen getting hands on experience, and we will all eat a community meal together afterwards. Volunteers would help with planning, publicizing the community kitchen nights in drop-in, facilitating the events, set up and clean up, and cooking, of course! The Community Kitchen times are TBD, but will be in the afternoon/evenings and held approximately once per month. Experience working with others, interest in cooking, and creativity are a plus!
Every Thursday morning, we run a small discussion and reflection group called ‘Talk & Pray’. Volunteers help lead and facilitate the discussion, and encourage participation from those that wish to talk. The group is weekly, but volunteers will generally be put on rotation (i.e. you may only be with the group once per month). Volunteers are encouraged to stay after for program, to engage with our participants and make some new friends. This position is good for anyone interested in theological conversations and creating an inclusive environment for these conversations.
Wish you could help with our Drop-In program but can't make the time commitment? We have at home opportunities too! Help put employment and volunteer opportunities together weekly at home. The Outreach Coordinator has various tasks and projects which at home volunteers can facilitate and help with. Generally, computer/internet research experience is necessary for these positions, and a weekly or bi-weekly flexible commitment is made.
We are always looking to partner with new businesses and foundations. If you have a gift for writing and would like to help us on a casual, at home basis, please contact Angie!
Are you an experienced professional looking to offer your services/expertise to our community? Contact the Outreach Coordinator to see how you can be involved!
