DESCRIPTION:One of the most prevalent questions related to poverty is the seeming connection to the use of drugs and alcohol. Does addiction more often cause homelessness\, or does being unhoused increase the likelihood of substance use? What attitude and posture are needed if we are going to find solutions? Join Jim Willis\, Case management and support worker\, Amanda Hintzen\, Addictions Counsellor\, Dr Jonathan Wong\, ICHA street doctor\, and Nithyen Manohar\, ICHA street nurse\, as we discuss the challenges of addiction\, the paths to recovery\, and how it affects the most vulnerable in our communities. With coffee.\n\n\n\n\nDr Jennifer Wilson will introduce us to her work at clinics in some of the poorest regions of Ghana\, and will speak about how her work and her faith have impacted each other. Dr Wilson is Assistant Professor\, Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto\, and Director of International Partnerships at Leyata Hospital\, Ghana.\n\n  \nMore about Dr Wilson:\nIn 2004\, Jennifer Wilson\, a member of Uxbridge Baptist Church\, a family medical practitioner and emergency room physician\, and mother of five\, attended a conference in Toronto. The keynote speaker was Stephen Lewis\, who was the UN Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa. He told story after story about what it was like for people living in Africa in the wake of a generation lost to the ravages of HIV/AIDS. Stephen Lewis’ words awakened in Dr Wilson a question: in light of the first two commandments\, love your God and love your neighbour as yourself\, how could she show compassion to global neighbours? \nIn 2007\, Dr Jennifer Wilson led her first medical mission to Ghana in partnership with an NGO. There were 10 more missions to come\, and eventually\, the founding of the Leyaata Hospital\, the only hospital in northern Ghana. The eleven missions of the Ghana Health Team from 2007 through 2018 are the subject of her book Grant Us Tomorrow which is a memoir\, written in first person\, but which is mostly a close-up of the health team\, the miracles that flowed through them\, and of the resilience and courage of the local heroes\, that is\, the people who queued for each clinic in droves\, some of them walking from neighbouring countries to receive care from Dr. Wilson’s Ghana Health Team.

SUMMARY:Face to Face With the People of Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Face to Face with the People of Palestine\n\nThis past December\, a delegation from the Diocese of Toronto went to Jerusalem and travelled through Israel and Palestine. They drew as close as they could to local life\, visiting holy sites and remote villages\, meeting local people and listening to their stories.\n\n\n\nOn January 25\, the Rev’d Dr Chris Brittain\, a member of the delegation\, will preach at the morning services. Following the 10:30 AM service\, we will gather over lunch to hear from four members of the delegation about their experiences and encounters. The panel will be moderated by Jon Allen\, former Canadian Ambassador to the State of Israel\, and director of the Rozana Project.\n\n\n\nThis is a precious opportunity to deepen our understanding of Palestinian culture\, and of everyday life under occupation\, and to learn from “shoes on the ground” examples of nonviolent resistance and reconciliation.\n\n\n\nRegistration for lunch is now closed\, but all are invited to attend the panel discussion. Why does the church receive it as the word of God? Why these ancient texts and not other ones? And what purpose does the Bible serve in the life and work of the church? We will begin to explore these important questions with the help of Luke 24:13-35 (the story of the road to Emmaus). We look forward to welcoming Stephen Chester as our speaker. \nStephen Chester has taught New Testament at Wycliffe College since 2019\, having taught previously at seminaries in Glasgow\, Scotland and Chicago\, USA. He is the author of several books on Pauline theology\, most recently Paul through the Eyes of the Reformers: Living Under Grace (Eerdmans\, 2025). As well as experience of different countries\, Stephen has experience of a variety of denominational traditions and is ordained in the Church of Scotland. He and his wife Betsy live in East York and have two adult sons in the USA. \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Sunday Explorations is our occasional series of discussions on selected topics\, Scriptural reflection\, book talks\, and more on Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM in the Board Room downstairs (with coffee on offer). The sessions are a wonderful chance to get to know one another better and to share questions\, concerns\, and insights about our faith and how we live it. \n\n\nApril 27\n\n\nThinking about…What is the church\, and why should anyone care? In this session\, Dr. Joseph Mangina will lead us in a conversation about the Christian church\, both its nature (what it is) and its mission (why it is). Is it still possible to confess faith in the church\, in light of its many failures? These are some of the questions we will explore in this gathering on the Sunday after Easter. \n\nProf. Joseph Mangina\, a PhD graduate of Yale University\, has been teaching at Wycliffe College since 1998. One of Dr. Mangina’s chief interests is the church\, in particular ecumenical theology. Every couple of years\, he helps teach a course in Rome pertaining to relations between Anglicans and Roman Catholics. He and his wife Elisa are longtime members and choristers at the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields.

Inspired by this tradition\, priests and artists Robert Lentz and William Hart McNichols have brought the practice to the modern West. Led by Paul Pynkoski\, we’ll share reflections on some of their icons.
