Two red dresses will be hung on the church doors to symbolize and honour those who are missing and murdered\, family members\, friends and survivors. We toll the bell 13 times for each of the moon cycles. \nBy making our bell heard throughout our community\, we hope to spread more awareness of this issue during national Indigenous history month.

SUMMARY:Talk by Professor Douglas Sanderson
DESCRIPTION:Professor Douglas Sanderson\, of the University of Toronto and a member of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation has been deeply engaged in Aboriginal issues from a policy perspective for over 20 years. He is giving a special free presentation at Church of the Redeemer on Saturday\, June 15 at 1 PM. His scholarship focuses on Aboriginal institutions\, post-colonial reconciliation and rebuilding community. Douglas is the Visiting Indigenous Scholar at Redeemer. \nHis talk is entitled Indigenous is the new Orientalism: Identity\, ambiguity\, and the creation of pretendians. He argues that Indigenous is a new category of people and reflects the expectations of non-Native people\, while at the same time opening space for the invention of Indigenous identity. In a 2017 article in Policy Magazine he set down a basic issue he has strongly advocated for: “ Although Indigenous people are a modern people\, the Indian Act is a relic from a bygone era. Most notably\, the Indian Act provides for almost no powers of taxation\, and thus relegates more than 600 First Nation communities to a state of perpetual poverty.” \nHis talk will be provocative and revealing and will be of great assistance in increasing our awareness of fundamental issues preventing reconciliation. \nPlease take a moment to register. SUMMARY:Honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
DESCRIPTION:Today our bell will toll 13 times to honour missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Two red dresses will be hung on the church doors to symbolize and honour those who are missing and murdered\, family members\, friends and survivors. We toll the bell 13 times for each of the moon cycles. \nBy making our bell heard throughout our community\, we hope to spread more awareness of this issue during national Indigenous history month.
