Luke 19\, Investment\, and Crucifixion Economics What if the parable that Jesus tells right after the story of Zacchaeus is not about using our gifts well but is actually literally about how we invest our money? And what if the story of Zacchaeus provides insight into the implications of such investment? In this session\, led by Sylvia Keesmaat\, we will dance between the biblical text and our current context.

DESCRIPTION:It’s been ten years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and their 94 Calls to Action. Little progress has been made What is the wider commitment to change across Canada? Where do we go from here? Join us for an afternoon of engaging presentations and discussion with three prominent leaders from the First Nations’ community: \nDouglas Sanderson – of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation of Manitoba is a UofT law professor and Visiting Indigenous Scholar at the Church of the Redeemer. The title of his talk is “Settlers and First Peoples: Reconciliation is fine. But what happened to justice?” \nDouglas Sinclair – of the Peguis First Nation of Manitoba\, is the publisher of Indigenous Watchdog. He will take a look at how far we have come on the calls to action\, his theme is Progress or Inaction? \nThe Venerable Rosalyn Kantlaht’ant Elm – chaplain from Six Nations\, will begin with prayer and then summarize the afternoon\, and then lead a discussion on where we go from here\, and what actions still need to be taken. \nThe Indigenous Solidarity Working Group of the Church of the Redeemer is hosting this opportunity to listen\, learn\, and enjoy lunch catered by a First Nations chef. A traditional smudging ceremony will open the sessions. There is no charge to attend\, donations are welcome. \nPlease feel welcome to attend this event. Doors open at 11:30 AM. Why does the church receive it as the word of God? Why these ancient texts and not other ones? And what purpose does the Bible serve in the life and work of the church? We will begin to explore these important questions with the help of Luke 24:13-35 (the story of the road to Emmaus). We look forward to welcoming Stephen Chester as our speaker. \nStephen Chester has taught New Testament at Wycliffe College since 2019\, having taught previously at seminaries in Glasgow\, Scotland and Chicago\, USA. He is the author of several books on Pauline theology\, most recently Paul through the Eyes of the Reformers: Living Under Grace (Eerdmans\, 2025). As well as experience of different countries\, Stephen has experience of a variety of denominational traditions and is ordained in the Church of Scotland. He and his wife Betsy live in East York and have two adult sons in the USA. \n\n\n
