Marginalia this Easter Season: The Emmaus Dare
Sunday, April 26, 2020, 9:00am - 10:20am
Two grieving disciples meet Jesus disguised as a stranger as they leave Jerusalem, three days after Jesus died. Sounds like the setup for a joke, or maybe a riddle. Anyhow, the two mourners spill their sad tale, only to have stranger-Jesus as good as laugh at them. Had they slept through synagogue Scripture reading? All this tragic mess had to happen to fulfil the Jewish Scriptures. So, the story says, “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures about himself.” Wait. What? Israel’s Scriptures spelled out death and resurrection ahead of time? How? Where? Rather than loop us in, this strange story leaves the riddle hanging, like an invitation to a childhood game of Hide and Seek. Or a dare.
Over this Easter season, our Sunday school for grown-ups, Marginalia, takes up the stranger’s dare. Led by our Scholar-in-Residence, Nate Wall, “The Emmaus Dare” will go looking for Easter eggs in the strange landscape of the Old Testament. Is it possible to find Jesus in the shadow and light of “the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms”? Grab some morning coffee (or tea), pull up your most comfortable chair, and join in via Zoom from 9 AM to 10:20 AM.
This Sunday: Out of the Depths (Exodus 14–15)
If you want to join Marginalia online, please e-mail Nate Wall by Saturday night. By Sunday morning he will send a link to the get-together.
On Sunday morning, get your coffee cup filled, settle into a comfy chair somewhere at home, and we’ll look for the Easter eggs in this week’s selection.
