As pilgrims, we are learning how to pray with our feet!
Camino Pilgrimage
In the fall of 2022, a group of parishioners from The Church of the Redeemer walked the Camino, an ancient pilgrimage route in northern Spain. Our pilgrims started in the tiny hill town of O’Cebreiro and ended their journey over 100 km later at the shrine of St. James in the Cathedral of Santiago.
Eucharist at the Island
The Becoming Pilgrims and Creation Matters committees invite you to come away to Toronto Island (Centre Island) to celebrate the Eucharist in an idyllic place apart from the hot hustle and bustle of the city at St. Andrew’s by-the-Lake on Saturday, August 17. We will gather on the lawn of St. Andrew’s by the labyrinth or firepit. The service will begin at 10:45 AM.
Please bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and a blanket or large towel on which to sit outside for the Liturgy of the Word.
After the service, we will make our way to the Riveria Café for lunch together. Or, if you prefer, you can picnic, have fun on the rides at Centreville, sunbathe on a beach of your choice, or walk to the lighthouse or Hanlan’s Point for a pilgrimage on foot.
Getting to the Island
We will travel on the Centre Island ferry that departs the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal at 9:45 AM. We will meet at 9:30 AM sharp. We strongly advise purchasing your tickets online before Saturday. You can also take the 10:20 AM ferry, but it is likely to be more crowded. Please note that Susan has done some reconnaissance and the line-ups reported in the media do not occur until around noon.
From the Centre Island ferry docks, follow the signs for Ward’s Island and the church. Centreville will be on your left as you walk. It is approximately a 15-minute walk. This pilgrimage is “walking-light.”
We hope to see many of you there – young and young-at-heart, landlubbers, and pilgrims of all kinds.
Pilgrimage to the UK in 2025
A group of about 20 pilgrims from Redeemer will walk St Cuthbert’s Way beginning May 8, 2025. Planning is well underway. Please join them in their preparations for this journey. All are invited to be part of this year’s Redeemer Summer Readers book groups. We are joining with Redeemer Explorers and Creation Matters, inviting the whole community to read John Philip Newell’s, Sacred Earth, Sacred Soul. Details about the groups and registration are on the Redeemer Explorers page of the website. In addition, lectures on medieval pilgrimage, testimonials from pilgrims who have already been to Lindisfarne, and local pilgrimages in 2024 throughout the GTA may also be part of this preparation. Watch this space as plans develop and events announced.
