Sunday Explorations
Sunday, June 1, 9:30am
Sunday Explorations is our occasional series of discussions on selected topics, Scriptural reflection, book talks, and more on Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM in the Board Room downstairs (with coffee on offer). The sessions are a wonderful chance to get to know one another better and to share questions, concerns, and insights about our faith and how we live it.
June 1 – Thinking About the Bible
What kind of book is the Bible? Why does the church receive it as the word of God? Why these ancient texts and not other ones? And what purpose does the Bible serve in the life and work of the church? We will begin to explore these important questions with the help of Luke 24:13-35 (the story of the road to Emmaus). We look forward to welcoming Stephen Chester as our speaker.
Stephen Chester has taught New Testament at Wycliffe College since 2019, having taught previously at seminaries in Glasgow, Scotland and Chicago, USA. He is the author of several books on Pauline theology, most recently Paul through the Eyes of the Reformers: Living Under Grace (Eerdmans, 2025). As well as experience of different countries, Stephen has experience of a variety of denominational traditions and is ordained in the Church of Scotland. He and his wife Betsy live in East York and have two adult sons in the USA.
